What is Emergency Management?
The Emergency Management Unit (sometimes known as Civil Defence) protects people, property and the environment in an emergency.
We do this by using the the 4 R's Framework.
The 4 R's
Reduction
Identifying and analysing long-term risks to human life and property from hazards; taking steps to eliminate these risks if practicable, and, if not, reducing the magnitude of their impact and the likelihood of their occurring.
Readiness and Response
Developing operational systems and capabilities before a civil defence emergency happens; including self-help and response programmes for the general public, and specific programmes for emergency services, lifeline utilities and other agencies.
Actions taken immediately before, during or directly after a civil defence emergency to save lives and protect property, and to help communities recover.
Recovery
The coordinated efforts and processes to bring about the immediate, medium-term and long-term holistic regeneration of a community following a civil defence emergency.
We work with Emergency Services, welfare agencies, and the community. Together, we are able to mobilise the our combined resources to cope with a disaster.
Emergency Management and you
Emergencies can happen anytime and anywhere. It is up to you to take steps to prepare. When things go wrong, having what you need and knowing what to do could save your life.
Personal resilience is having an understanding of what to do in an emergency. What would you do if you were at the beach and a severe earthquake occurred? What about a bush fire close by? Or an ex-tropical storm that has isolated your community?
Get prepared. It’s up to you to make sure your family, and the people you care about, know what to do. Make sure you all have what you need to get through on your own.
