Traffic Bylaw 2017 - Te Ture ā-Rohe Waka Haere

The Traffic Control Bylaw 2017 was adopted by Council on 12 June 2017 and came into force on 1 September 2017. It was reviewed and amended in 2024 with the amended Traffic Bylaw 2017 coming into force on 1 November 2024.

You can read the amended version of the Traffic Bylaw here. Please note: the official, signed copy of the official bylaw will be posted soon.

This Bylaw allows our Council to set requirements for the control of vehicular or other traffic on any road under its control. It does not apply to State Highways or those intersections where Council-controlled roads intersect with State Highways. Waka Kotahi - The NZ Transport Agency is responsible for these.

What the Traffic Bylaw does:

  • enables the designation of roads as one-way
  • enables the restriction of certain turning manoeuvres, such as left or right turns
  • enables the prohibition or restriction of certain classes of vehicles such as heavy vehicles, on specified roads
  • enables the designation of cycle paths.

What the Traffic Bylaw does not do:

Details of the prohibitions, restrictions and other controls made by Council under the Bylaw are recorded in the Traffic Bylaw 2017 Register of Resolutions and can be found here.

If you think the traffic regulations on your street need to change, or if you have other concerns about roading in our District you can lodge a Request for Service and our Roading Team will investigate.
