Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori is upon us next week, offering a special opportunity to celebrate and promote te reo Māori. This year’s theme is, “Ake Ake Ake: A Forever Language.”

This week-long event is a chance to encourage the use of Māori in our everyday lives. In Aotearoa New Zealand, the revitalisation of te reo Māori is a significant movement. Over the past decade, the number of te reo Māori speakers has been steadily increasing, and the government’s ambitious goal is to have one million New Zealanders able to speak basic te reo Māori by 2040.

Every minute of every day can be a Māori language minute. Even small efforts, like saying “kia ora” or using other Māori phrases, contribute to the revitalisation of te reo Māori. Each word spoken helps keep the language alive.

Whitianga Esplanade Redevelopment

whitianga-wharf-and-esplanade-26-july-2024-8.jpg Funding has been included in the 2024-2034 Long Term Plan (LTP) for the years 2027-2030 to improve the Whitianga Esplanade area, to allow for growth in the activities taking place there and alleviate safety issues.

Several initial sessions have been held so far this year with the project’s advisory group and a wide range of local waterfront users to listen to their needs and aspirations in the early stages of exploring options, and to better understand requirements and concerns. We are adding people to user focus groups as we go and as concepts are raised and explored. No decisions have been made.

New Public Convenience Facilities

New Public Convenience Facilities.png A procurement plan was approved and signed this week, allowing staff to progress with the programme to deliver nine new toilets around the district and a new dump station in Whangamatā.

These new public conveniences are largely funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) through their Tourism Infrastructure Fund (TIF), as well as contributions from community groups. The toilets will be delivered by the end of the financial year, June 2025.

The Whangamatā dump station is tracking to open before the Christmas rush.

Mautohe Cathedral Cove work

CC.jpg

This month, the Department of Conservation (DOC) started physical work to reinstate walking access to Mautohe Cathedral Cove.

Unfortunately, DOC’s arborist contractors –who have been felling dozens of hazardous trees - had to down tools when two members of the public walked down the track, ignoring the 'closed track' signs.

To reopen the track in December, DOC need a safe and well-managed worksite – and that means people must stay off the track.

Interruptions caused by people on the track will slow down DOC’s progress.

Please help by sharing the message for visitors to stay off the Mautohe Cathedral Cove track.
