Stay up to date with our summer dog rules

labourweekenddogs.jpg It’s Labour weekend and that means changes to some of our local dog rules. Summer rules about where you can walk your dog are put in place from Labour weekend to 1 March, with additional restrictions and prohibitions from 20 December to 31 January. These rules help to protect dogs, people, and wildlife during peak periods and nesting times.

The most important rule to remember is that dogs must always be under control. Make sure your dog is on lead unless specified otherwise.

Things you've got to know

Dogs in urban areas: Dogs must always be kept on lead while in urban areas like town centres and roads.

Dogs on beaches: Many of our beaches will have restrictions in place this weekend. Dogs may be completely prohibited or only allowed on the beach during certain times - usually before 9am and after 6pm.

Council makes it easy to stay up to date with the rules at your favourite beach. Look for these signs when you take a walk, and ensure you follow these rules.

Dog traffic lights.pngGreen signs denote exercise areas:You can have your dog off lead, but it must be under control at all times.

Orange signs denote on lead areas: Your dog must remain on lead for times noted on the sign.

Red signs denote prohibited areas: This means no dogs at all. Most beach area prohibitions are either during the dotterel nesting season from Labour weekend to 1 March, or over the summer period and holiday weekends. We also have areas that are prohibited all year round.

playgrounds.jpg Dogs around playgrounds: Dogs should never be within a children's playground. This rule was put in place to protect children and other users, as well as the assets and equipment.

Dog poo: Please remember that it is your responsibility to clean up your dog's poo. Take a few bags with you on walks or take advantage of our free poo bag dispensers in some of our districts most popular dog walking areas.

HCBA 2024 PPT (square).png The winners of the Hauraki Coromandel Business Awards 2024 have been revealed, with The Waterworks named the Supreme Winner at the event on Wednesday in Thames.

The quirky water-themed park stood out among more than 30 finalists across 12 categories, also securing the award for Contribution to Tourism and Hospitality. Judges praised its strong community ties and commitment to environmental sustainability through local initiatives.

Dive Zone Whitianga and EPL Construction were recognized as joint winners in the Community Contribution category, reflecting their integral roles in supporting local initiatives and fostering community spirit. Building and planning consent Christmas processing times

AdobeStock_364575743-b48dec060c9a2ac7.jpg We'd like to remind you that both the Building Act 2004 and the Resource Management Act 1991 pause the statutory processing clock over the Christmas and New Year period. This means that from Friday 20 December to Friday 10 January, the processing timeframe of 20 working days will be on hold.

Any Resource or Building Consent applications submitted on or after Friday, 20 December 2024, will only start to be processed on Monday, 13 January 2025, due to the holiday break.

To ensure your consent is processed before Christmas (unless further information is needed, which could pause the clock), we recommend submitting your application before Friday 22 November 2024.

Special licence applications

Are you planning to hold an event where you want to sell or supply alcohol over the Christmas and New Year period?

Then here are some things you need to know:

  • We must receive your application(s) by 13 November 2024.
  • Special licence applications must be received at least 20 working days* (preferably more) before your event date.
  • For large events it's recommended you apply well in advance of the 20 working days.
  • Late applications won’t be accepted.

*Working days don't include public holidays, weekends and the period from 20 December to 15 January inclusive.

If your application is contested (opposed or objected to), it will go to a hearing in front of the District Licensing Committee and any decision about your application will take longer.

Project Updates

Aquatic plant harvesting in Cooks Beach Lakes

Over the past two weeks, our contractor has been working to harvest aquatic plants in Cooks Beach Lakes. Unfortunately, due to a mechanical issue, the contractor was unable to complete the task before Labour weekend. The contractor is now scheduled to resume work after the public holiday, focusing on harvesting and managing the lake margins.

In the meantime, residents and visitors may notice floating plants and organic material accumulating along the lake’s edges, particularly near the eastern end by the walkway to Charles Green Drive. For health and safety reasons, we strongly advise residents and visitors to avoid entering the water due to the presence of loose, floating vegetation and organic debris.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Colville Road update

Recovery work from 2023 cyclone events continues with progress made on the first of four projects starting this month around the Coromandel Peninsula.

Near Oamaru Bay on Colville Rd contractors have built an eight-metre-tall wood pile retaining wall covering about 60m.The works are expected to take about three months and are being completed ahead of schedule.

We’d like to thank the local community for their patience while we work to complete repairs to the roading network. Each site’s completion will provide better access to other areas damaged by the cyclones. We anticipate all sites will be finished by Christmas 2025.

Share your vision for Matarangi’s Omara Reserve

Omara Reserve.png We want to hear your thoughts on how the land by the boat ramp on the estuary can be tidied up and organised so that it remains open space available for the whole community to use, including families with children.

The land is zoned as passive recreation, which means flexible open space for walking, picnicking, playing frisbee, accessing the beach, and what else?
