Community Service Awards, Matarangi Stormwater progress and more

Community Service Awards recipients
Throughout our District, there are many people who work quietly away at making our communities better places to live, often with little recognition and no pay. To acknowledge a few of these people and as a way of saying thank you, every two years we hold our Community Service Awards.
Congratulations to our 2024 Community Service Award Recipients.
Tairua-Pāuanui: Tina Larsen, Les Sinton
Whangamatā: Greame Webb, Rob Boston
Thames: Carolyn McKenzie, John Sanford.
Mercury Bay and Coromandel-Colville winners will be announced next week.
Matarangi stormwater services progress
Thames-Coromandel District Council is planning to hold a stakeholder engagement meeting next month to review and update plans to upgrade the Matarangi stormwater services.
Significant maintenance work has been carried out in the stormwater and groundwater networks with blockages removed within both networks.
Our Council is working closely with the golf course to manage lake levels prior to storm events. New measuring staffs will be installed to monitor the levels of the Golf and Link lakes.
Our Council is testing stormwater infrastructure solutions (to reduce flooding) against a working draft of the flood model.
It is also planning to release the finalised Matarangi Flood Model. This will include the 1% Annual Exceedance Flood extent (the one in 100-year flood event) into the Smart Map Hazard portal on the Council website.
This will follow a similar format to the recently released Whangamatā Flood Model.
The Matarangi flood modelling is still being developed and finalised.
Funding of $3.2 million was allocated in the Long Term Plan 2024-34 for stormwater projects, starting from 2025/26.
Whitianga Esplanade redevelopment project
The Whitianga community is being asked to have its say on how best to improve the local wharf, waterfront and boating ramp areas.
Our Council has six concept plans which have been broken into three avenues – improvements to marine structures; improvements to the waterfront area; and improvements to the Robinson Road boat ramp area.
The changes are to address long-standing safety issues over multiple users in a limited space and to allow for growth in activities there.
The concept plans were borne from the wants and needs of primary users of the areas. Our Council now wants to hear from the wider community about what it most prefers.
You can give your feedback online, using a paper form, or at one of several drop-in sessions being held in Whitianga during November and December.
It’s important everyone has the chance to have their say. All feedback will be considered to help guide the council’s eventual decision-making process.

New rubbish and recycling calendars
Check out our new kerbside rubbish and recycling collection calendars for our 2024/25 summer peak period and 2025 on our website.
We’ve included information about summer peak collections (for those areas with an influx of summer visitors) in the 2025 calendar, in order to keep all the information in one place and reduce the number of printed calendars. Printed calendars should be available from our Council offices and our PAYT tag retailers by Friday 6 December.

Tapu-Coroglen Road metaling work to begin
Work is due to start on Monday 2 December on bulk metaling of the unsealed sections of Tapu-Coroglen Road. There will be stop/stop traffic management in place which will delay road users. Please drive carefully on this road as there will also be multiple trucks and trailers using the road.
The work is expected to take two weeks and should finish in mid-December – weather dependent.

Whangamatā stormwater project
Our drop-in information sessions for property owners to find out more about how our new stormwater flood modelling affects their section have finished. Thank you to all those who attended.
If you own a property in Whangamatā and received an information letter in mid-October but couldn’t make our drop-in sessions, please get in touch to talk to a member of our team by putting in a Request For Service (RFS) either by:
• Email – customer.services@tcdc.govt.nz
• Online – www.tcdc.govt.nz/rfs
• Phone – 07 868 0200
Our Council has modelled stormwater flooding in the township in order to understand where infrastructure work to alleviate the issue needs to be carried out.
To access the stormwater flood model maps, visit our website: www.tcdc.govt.nz/whangamatastormwater.
The flood maps can be reviewed to take into account any property-specific information. You can request a review of the flooding risk that has been identified on your property. Gather all your relevant property information, contact us by one of the means above, and we’ll be in touch to review your situation.
