Emergency preparedness workshops
Our Council has partnered with Age Concern Hauraki Coromandel to offer Emergency preparedness workshops.
The first workshop was held this week and had a great turnout. This initiative aims to educate and support older persons on emergency preparedness and identifies the steps to developing their own emergency plan.
These helpful sessions cover important topics like understanding hazards, how to stay informed and personal preparedness. Participants work through the contents of an emergency plan and how to prepare your own plan.
Don’t miss out - being prepared makes a difference.

Celebrating the International Day of Older Persons
On Tuesday 1 October, we celebrated the International Day of Older Persons with special morning teas in Thames, Coromandel, and Whitianga. Guests enjoyed delicious brunches and live entertainment. People were dancing, moving, and, most importantly, having fun.
A big thank you to everyone who organised and hosted the events, and to all those who joined us in the celebration. It was a fantastic day to honour our amazing older citizens across the district.

Road works on Colville Road
We're currently working on repairing storm damage at three spots along Colville Road (you can check out the locations in the image below). We understand these repairs are causing some inconvenience for road users, and we really appreciate your patience. Our goal is to ensure the road is safe and fully open to two lanes as soon as possible, while balancing traffic delays and allowing the contractor progress efficiently.
All three areas have temporary traffic management in place. You can find the details for each site below.
Colville Rd 16.358km:
To balance traffic flow and keep the work moving smoothly, the traffic management plan will keep one lane open under traffic signals after hours (from 5pm–9am). However, during the day (9am-5pm), the road will be fully closed for 50-minute intervals, with 10-minute openings at the start of every hour.
The work is expected to be completed by early December 2024 and is being carried out by Kelsey Construction.
Colville Rd 11.1km:
Work will take place from 7am-7pm, Monday to Saturday.
To minimise traffic disruptions while allowing the contractor to continue work, expect approximately 10-minute delays at the site under traffic signals. There are three signals in place to allow for side access, which may result in slightly longer wait times.
The project is expected to be completed by early October 2024 and is being carried out by Kelsey Construction.
Colville Rd 4.799km:
Work hours will be from 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday.
To help manage traffic while allowing the Contractor to progress with the work, expect around a 5-minute delay at the site under traffic signals. Intermittently, and when heavy machinery needs to use the traffic lane, there will be 15-minute delays managed by a stop/go operation.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of October 2024 and is being carried out by Nick Pemberton Construction.
In addition to the storm repair sites, ongoing road maintenance including repair patches and unsealed road metalling will continue along Colville Rd and nearby roads.
Share your vision for Matarangi’s Omara Reserve
We want to hear your thoughts on how the land by the boat ramp on the estuary can be tidied up and organised so that it remains open space available for the whole community to use, including families with children.
The land is zoned as passive recreation, which means flexible open space for walking, picnicking, playing frisbee, accessing the beach, and what else?
