Weather and roads update, Monday afternoon 30 October
Published on 30 October 2023
Weather, roading and Council services update 2pm:
MetService has advised this afternoon that the severe weather warning for the Coromandel has been extended to 9am Tuesday with a further 200mm of rain expected.
There is a lull in the weather at the moment, however heavy rainfall will build again during the afternoon and coincide with the next King Tide at around 9pm.
The gale force winds will ease somewhat but strong easterlies will remain overnight.
Both local roads and the state highways have been impacted today, and an extreme ‘caution advisory’ is in place for those travelling. Keep checking our website, our Facebook page and Waka Kotahi for updates on closures from slips, flooding and fallen trees.
Our Civil Defence Team has another briefing with MetService this evening at 5pm so we will post another update after that. Keep safe and connected.

Matatoki, Puriri and Omahu Water Notice
Council is asking Matatoki, Puriri and Omahu residents to please conserve water for approximately the next 24 to 48 hours. The heavy rain we have had overnight means the streams we draw water from are carrying a heavy sediment load. This means the water treatment plants have to process at a much slower rate due to the additional sediment in the water, or even be shut off at times to clean filters. If residents can be mindful of their water use at this time, it would be much appreciated.
To support the water supply we have set up a water tanker in Puriri for residents to utilise.
Kerbside collection (it's Red Week): No collections today.
Today's collections will be on Tuesday, Tuesday's collections on Wednesday and so on for the rest of the week with Friday's collections taking place on Saturday.
♻️The following Refuse and Recycling transfer stations (RTS) will remain closed for today: Coromandel, Tairua, Pāuanui, and Matarangi.
♻️ The larger three sites will open with reduced hours being 1pm to 4pm: Thames, Whangamatā and Whitianga.
Powerco unable to reach Kauaeranga Valley faults
An update from Powerco: flooding is causing big issues for workers trying to access Kauaeranga Valley to fix several faults.
Unless the flooding subsides dramatically, it's too unsafe for crews to get power restored today.
A couple of important reminders:
If you come across fallen power lines, stay clear and call Powerco's 24/7 emergency line 0800 27 27 27, or 111.
Thames Centennial Pool will now stay closed all day and reopen at 6am tomorrow (Tuesday).
