Know a local hero? Nominate them for our Community Service Awards

Our Community Service Awards aim to recognise the unsung heroes of our communities.

Throughout our District, there are many people who work quietly away at making our communities better places to live, often with little recognition and no pay.

Their commitment, generosity and dedication are unreserved, and the Thames-Coromandel District Council’s Community Service Awards is a way of giving some well-deserved recognition.

Know someone who deserves to be honoured for their hard work? Nominations are now open for the Community Service Awards 2024 until 23 August.

Proactive Measures Against Avian Influenza

Avain influenza.PNG Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, is an infection that primarily affects birds. New Zealand is preparing for avian influenza by taking steps to prevent its arrival and spread.

The Ministry of Primary Industries is working with a range of services to understand current risk management practices and developing biosecurity plans to make sure New Zealand is well protected.

Avian influenza isn’t a threat to food safety. You can safely eat properly handled and cooked poultry meat, eggs, and milk products because the virus doesn’t survive heat.

Whangamatā scheduled power outages

Powerco is planning all-day power outages in Whangamatā on 6 and 16 August. They’re replacing some poles and installing a fibre network so they can monitor and remotely control the electricity network. The Whangamatā BESS (battery energy storage system) will provide back up for the commercial/retail area, and backfeeds will supply portions of Whangamatā, however large portions of town will be out.

Powerco is also planning work in the Whangapoua area (not including Matarangi) that will require outages. If you live, work or visit that area, Powerco is asking that you take their short survey on when the outages take place and how long they last.

For more information on the outages, updates and power outage tips, visit Powerco’s planned outage web page.
