Privacy Statement

If you've given us your email address as part of a competition, we treat that as a very special privilege and will only use that for good and never for evil. We won't sell it either. We want you to have a great experience with our online team and we never want to mess that up. We're thrilled to have you with us, and we want to treat your privacy in such a way that you'll be glad to stick around.

If you've signed up for our eNewsletters, we won't sell you out. If other people want to contact you, they can figure out how to do that by themselves. Your trust means a lot to us.

When you submit information to us through our website or Facebook page, it means you agree to us collecting, storing, using and disclosing your information as instructed in the (New Zealand) Privacy Act 1993.

You can ask for access to your information at any time and you can ask us to correct it.

If you have given us your consent (when we have asked) we may contact you by email or phone (depending on how you have told us we can contact you) for market research (such as a survey where we'd love your opinion on ways we can give you the things you want from us in a better or new way) or to let you know when we have new or better things or services we think you might want to know about.

If you don't want us to contact you about any of these things, you can always tell us on the phone, email or in a letter, and instruct us not to send you any more of this kind of information. If it's an eNewsletter you no longer want, there is an automatic unsubscribe link on it. But we can do it for you anytime without prejudice.

If you're new to doing things online, it is worth knowing that anything you do on the internet, whether on our site or when just surfing the web generally, is automatically recorded through cookies.

Cookies are simple text files stored on your computer by your web browser. Cookies created on your computer by using this web site do not contain "personal information" and do not compromise your privacy or security. We use the cookie feature only to store a randomly generated identifying temporary tag on your computer. You can refuse the cookie or delete the cookie file from your computer by using any of the widely available methods. However, if you turn your cookie option off, you may not be able to access some of the features in our interactive applications.

Your ISP and Google have records of what sites you visit, what search terms you use and what pages you go to. We can see some of this too, but only related to the Council website. Sometimes we look at all the things that happen on our website (as a whole) so we can make improvements. Frankly we don't have the time or resource to go through all transactions individually. Those we get to know personally are usually those that email us directly or chat to us on Facebook.

To prevent unauthorised access and to maintain data security we have special security measures. For example, although the main TCDC website is in the big wide web world, when you go to our e-services to pay rates or make another confidential transaction with us, we take you to our own secure in-house site out of sight of prying eyes. But even on our main site, we still have massive (and really impressive) online and offline security measures.

We use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google Inc to collect statistical information about your visit.

We use this information to help us understand how people are using this website and then to improve it. These tools do not identify the individuals using the website. We can see a record of what people do on the site, but not who they are.

We use your e-mail to respond appropriately. This may be to respond to you, to address issues you identify, to further improve our web site, or to forward the e-mail to the relevant staff member for appropriate action.
