An Eastern Seaboard Coastal Management Plan focusing on the coast from Paku in Tairua through to the Otahu Estuary in Whangamata has been developed. A working group was set up to develop the plan, consisting of independent coastal scientist Jim Dahm and his associate, property owners, representatives of the Tairua-Pauanui and Whangamata Community Boards, iwi and district and regional council staff. “We know that the Coromandel’s beaches are one of the main reasons people choose to come and live or visit our district and we need to ensure it’s better protected,” says South Eastern Ward area manager Garry Towler. The coastal management plan will guide future short, medium and long term coastal management. The plan was completed in October 2015 and in November the Tairua-Pauanui and Whangamata community boards approved it. It is available to download on the right side of this page.
