The Tairua Campground will be revitalised with the Tairua-Pauanui Community Board unanimously agreeing to spruce up the campground in time for next summer at the 8 April meeting. The lease on the campground has been handed back to Council by the current lessee, which has provided an opportunity to reassess the future of the campground. The campground will be closed from 1 May 2019 to 1 October 2019 so the kitchen and bathroom areas can be revitalised. Our Council will be seeking a new lessee through a tender process at the end of June 2019 so that the campground can be open in time for Labour Weekend, and summer holiday makers. Updates on this process will be published on this page. Council staff will be contacting those who currently have caravans at the campground to arrange timing of their removal. The Community Board also agreed that the campground footprint be retained, meaning they will not be considering any new buildings unrelated to the campground on that site. The Tairua Information Centre has expressed a preference to stay in the Tairua library building, rather than move onto the campground site. This request will be considered by the Board at its next meeting on 10 June. There has also been a community aspiration to establish a heritage centre in Tairua. This has not been formalised and could be considered as part of Council’s 2021-2031 Long Term Plan process.
