Hikuai is a rural community, beginning in the west near the intersection of SH 25a and Puketui Road, following the Tairua River east to the fringes of Tairua/Pauanui and dominated from the north by the Coromandel Ranges and to the south by forestry, farms and the Momoparaua Block. It's a place many people drive through on the way to the beach but the DOC campground in the Broken Hills, the Tairua River, the old mining works and the area's tramping trails are becoming increasingly popular with visitors. The Hikuai Community Plan identifies what the community wants for the future of their area and how they intend to get there and is a natural extension of the plan written in 2006. In a similar fashion, it is intended to guide the Tairua-Pauanui Community Board and Thames-Coromandel District Council regarding the concerns and needs of the community, spending and services provided. This latest plan is based on the results of a survey developed by the Hikuai Community Group and will be presented to the Tairua-Pauanui Community Board.
