Hahei parking: some changes in the village centre

09 April 2019

To fine tune visitor parking in the centre of Hahei around the shops, we've made a few small changes that take effect from 2 May.

Hahei Visitor Car Park

The loading zone outside the shops on Hahei Beach Road will be reinstated while the four parallel car parks in front of the shops will be changed from one-hour to 30-minute parking.

The first car park next to the pedestrian crossing on Grange Road will be changed to a no parking area because of reports of near-misses from cars reversing out of the park.

The already marked mobility car parks outside Hahei Hall will be officially recognised in the Parking Control Bylaw.

These amendments to the Parking Control Bylaw were made at last week’s Council meeting after consultation with business owners and the Hahei Residents and Ratepayers Association.

They follow parking changes made in December 2018, which made the car parks on Hahei Beach Rd outside the shops a stop for the Cathedral Cove bus service between 1 October and 30 April each year and 60-minuted timed parking the rest of the year; created a drop-off only zone at the beach-front end of Hahei Beach Rd; and created two mobility parks directly opposite the beach access.

Visiting Hahei and need to park?

We encourage all visitors to Hahei to use the large Hahei Visitor Car Park off Hahei Beach Rd at the entrance to the village. Check this map for its exact location.

There is currently no charge to park there. From the car park it’s a short walk to the beach and from 1 October to 30 April each year there is a paid park and ride bus service to the start of the path to Cathedral Cove at the top of Grange Rd.

To read more about the Cathedral Cove park and ride shuttle visit www.go-kiwi.co.nz.

The Hahei Visitor Car Park is being expanded and a path to the beach that is largely away from the road is being built. There is also a public toilet at the car park.

The car park at the top of Grange Rd is drop-off only from 1 October to 30 April each year with no parking except for two mobility parks with a four-hour limit.

From 1 May to 30 September each year parking is permitted with a flat charge of $15 per vehicle with a four-hour time limit.

The car park is closed outside daylight hours all year and freedom camping is prohibited.
