Opportunities come knocking with the Whitianga Town Centre upgrade 07 August 2018 Every week we promote a local business affected by the town centre upgrade. This week we caught up with the lovely team at the St John Opportunity shop. On the day of our visit, we chatted with Suzie the store manager along with Bernice, Jenny, Gwenda and Corinna, who are just some of the 42 volunteer staff working together in shifts, with two shifts a day, six days a week. Having been open at 29 Albert Street for just over 12 months, the location has added a new dynamic to the St John operation, and they just keep ramping up. "We like to consider ourselves a one-stop-shop," says Suzie. "We have a kids corner which was especially busy during the school holidays, while parents were busy shopping and checking out the town centre progress outside." "The main street will be absolutely lovely when it's done and the contractors have been really good with keeping us up to date with progress," Suzie adds. St John also have a pickup and delivery team, who get out an about collecting larger donated goods from in and around Whitianga, while also offering a delivery service again for the larger items, for a small fee. "The small delivery fee for the bigger items helps cover our costs for petrol, as we're all volunteers and this is something we offer through our team and own vehicles," says Suzie. With bargains galore on offer and being so close to the first phase of the town centre upgrade that's almost completed, it seems like a good time to pop down and check out all the funky and functional knick knacks on offer. Or just pick up a bargain with their winter sale and options like 'fill a bag of women's winter clothing for $5'. Check out their Facebook page for contact information, open and closing times and generally what's on offer in store.
