Rates rebate help available

02 August 2018

Applications for the 2018/2019 rates rebate year from the Department of Internal Affairs are now available.

The maximum rebate this year has increased to $630. Rebates are calculated on a sliding scale dependant on the amount of household income and rates payable for the year.

The other major change this year is that retirement village residents who live in non-separately rated units and contribute to the outgoings of the village can now apply.

Application forms and guidelines from the Department of Internal Affairs on what needs to be done can be found on our website will also be available at all of our offices.

Our Customer Services teams at our offices are available to help you fill in the forms. You will need to bring ID such as your driver licence, Community Services Card or SuperGold Card and provide proof of income when applying for the rebate:

  • if your only source of income is superannuation, no proof is required. DIA provide this information
  • if you receive interest from your bank or investments, you will need to get a Resident Withhold Tax (RWT) certificate from your bank or investment company
  • obtain a summary of earnings from Inland Revenue (IRD) by:
  1. Phone: 0800 257 778; this is the summary of earnings direct line (it is automated)
  2. The voice will ask you to enter your IRD number
  3. You will be asked to confirm that your address has not changed since your last interaction with IRD (they will give you that date)
  4. You will then be asked to enter the year you are wanting the information for - for this current rating year it will be 2018
  5. You will then be advised this will be sent in the next 5 to 10 days
