What's on in the Coromandel? 17 August 2018 A sixty-car field, including World Rally Championship star Hayden Paddon, is expected for the fifth round of the New Zealand Rally Championship this weekend around Whitianga and north of Coromandel Town. Thames 150 Hospital Celebrations James MacKay 2018 Lectures Monthly lectures will lead up to the celebration of 150 years since the opening of Thames Hospital. The general public is welcome to attend on a Wednesday evenings from 5.00pm to 7.00pm. The presentations will be followed by questions in under an hour. A small supper will be served. Thursday 30 August 2018 - 6.30pm - 9.00pm Whangamata Surf Club A screening of the feature length surfing documentary 'The Way'. The film has been officially selected at eight different festivals around the world and has picked up three awards so far. Saturday 1 September - 7.00pm - 10.00pm Whitianga Town Hall Quizzical Tipples and Tunes is a light-hearted, fun night of fabulous music from the movies and dance music (performed by Waikato’s Opus Orchestra’s professional ensemble, OCTavo), brain teasing quizzes and wine and cheese sampling. There will be lots of time for round-the-table and dance-floor conviviality, providing the perfect opportunity for connections old and new in a relaxed and congenial environment. Whangamata Run Walk Festival Saturday 8 September 2018 With the half marathon (21km), the 10km and 5km events, the Whangamata Run Walk Festival offers something for participants of all ages and abilities. Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 September 2018 The Whitianga Scallop Festival is having a gap year due to the town centre and marina upgrade – but for those keen to enjoy the local delicacy fresh at the start of the season, save this date. The Whitianga local restaurants are hosting a Celebration of Seafood weekend, come and enjoy seafood and music with beer and wine matches, in and around Whitianga Restaurants and Wineries. More information will follow. Steampunk the Thames 8 - 11 November 2019 The Thames Steampunk Festival rocks our region’s biggest town every November. The event attracts people from all over New Zealand, as well as steampunk enthusiasts from around the world, many of whom book their visit years in advance. The festival programme includes steampunk balls, banquet and burlesque, as well as exhibitions and concerts. Many events are family-friendly and free. Leadfoot Festival 2 and 3 February 2019 The Leadfoot Festival is a unique weekend bringing together a mix of classic cars, vintage motorcycles and motorsport legends. Tuia 250 Encounters In 2019, New Zealand will mark 250 years since the first meetings between Māori and Europeans during James Cook and the Endeavour's 1769 voyage to Aotearoa New Zealand.
