What's on in the Coromandel?

The Coromandel's event calendar is bursting with events as we think about summer plans. The Whitianga Summer Concert which was a sell-out in 2018 so make sure you get in quick and secure yourself a ticket for January 2019 while they are still available.

Colour Rush

Saturday 25 August 2018, 1.00pm

Open to all ages with great prizes to be won. Colour Rush is made up of a number of obstacles placed around Danby Fields, including a mud pit, bouncy castle and more. .  All this while being ambushed by the Thames High School's senior football teams with coloured powder.

Whangamata Surf Club

A screening of the feature length surfing documentary 'The Way'. The film has been officially selected at eight different festivals around the world and has picked up three awards so far.

Each ticket purchased entitles one person access to the screening and the musical performance afterwards by 'The Bollands'.

An Evening with Mark Kitteridge of Ocean Angler

Tairua and Pauanui Sports Fishing Club

Bought to you by Gull, come along and listen to Mark Kitteridge present all aspects of soft bait fishing with the Ocean Angler system and how to target and catch kingfish.  Mark holds a wealth of knowledge and expertise which makes this a seminar not to miss. 

There will be two 40 minute seminars one on soft baiting and one on kingfish.

Whitianga Town Hall

Quizzical Tipples and Tunes is a light-hearted, fun night of fabulous music from the movies and dance music (performed by Waikato’s Opus Orchestra’s professional ensemble, OCTavo), brain teasing quizzes and wine and cheese sampling.

There will be lots of time for round-the-table and dance-floor conviviality, providing the perfect opportunity for connections old and new in a relaxed and congenial environment.

Put together a table of eight friends or colleagues, and make sure you have among them a wine connoisseur, a show-tunes maestro, and a great cheese palate to have the competition covered.

Whangamata Run Walk Festival

With the half marathon (21km), the 10km and 5km events, the Whangamata Run Walk Festival offers something for participants of all ages and abilities. All three courses take in spectacular views of ocean beach and pristine bush-clad hills along the way.

The Whitianga Scallop Festival is having a gap year due to the town centre and marina upgrade – but for those keen to enjoy the local delicacy fresh at the start of the season, save this date.

The Whitianga local restaurants are hosting a Celebration of Seafood weekend, come and enjoy seafood and music with beer and wine matches,  in and around Whitianga Restaurants and Wineries.  More information will follow.

Steampunk the Thames

8 - 11 November 2019

The Thames Steampunk Festival rocks our region’s biggest town every November.

The event attracts people from all over New Zealand, as well as steampunk enthusiasts from around the world, many of whom book their visit years in advance.

The festival programme includes steampunk balls, banquet and burlesque, as well as exhibitions and concerts. Many events are family-friendly and free.

Punk my Pet

Leadfoot Festival  

2 and 3 February 2019

The Leadfoot Festival is a unique weekend bringing together a mix of classic cars, vintage motorcycles and motorsport legends. Tickets are offered to the general public with an invitation to Rod and Shelly Millen’s private grounds at Leadfoot Ranch. The 150 acre, ocean-front estate in Hahei on the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula features a long driveway that winds through the property designed to be the perfect hill climb.

Tuia 250 Encounters

In 2019, New Zealand will mark 250 years since the first meetings between Māori and Europeans during James Cook and the Endeavour's 1769 voyage to Aotearoa New Zealand. A national commemoration, Tuia – Encounters 250, will acknowledge this pivotal moment in our nation’s history as well as the exceptional feats of Pacific voyagers who reached and settled in Aotearoa many years earlier.

Farmers Markets

Thames Market

Every Saturday 8am-12noon - Pollen Street, Grahamstown. Head down to the Thames Market this weekend. Don't forget to bring your own bag, basket or box to the Thames Market, plastic carry bags are no longer allowed.

Tairua Market

The first Saturday of every month, you will find this eclectic collection of stalls and produce right by the harbour next to the one-lane bridge in the Tairua Main Road.  From 9:00am through to about 1:00pm.

Coromandel Town Homegrown Community Market

Each Friday morning on Wharf Road beside the BNZ Bank you will find an array of local/homegrown produce and crafts for sale. Organic and gluten free options . . . you're spoilt for choice.

Thames Library Book Club is a relaxed and informal book group. Meet other book lovers and share what you’re reading. Here's the ideal place to pick up some tasty new titles.

The Book Club is held in the Thames Library's meeting space, the Carnegie Room, on the first Friday of every month.

Lego Club

Mercury Bay Lego Club is free and happens every Tuesday from 3.30pm - 4.30pm at Mercury Bay Library.

Thames Lego Club is free and happens on the first Wednesday of the month from 3.30pm - 4.30pm at Thames Library.
