Coromandel Town Business Association reopens Information Centre in time for summer

03 December 2012

The new Chairperson of the Coromandel Business Association, Brenda Kelsey, announced at today's Coromandel/Colville Community Board Meeting that the Association had reopened the town's Information Centre with volunteers from the community.

Ms Kelsey said at the meeting the town really needed an Information Centre for the busy summer season ahead and the Business Association now has one open 7 days a week from 10am to 4pm.

The Association also presented a high-level business plan to the Community Board outlining their approach to increasing the scale of the Information Centre over time. The proposal outlines a plan to start small by providing visitor information using a volunteer-base over summer and then to look at a full-service Information Centre able to make bookings and sell tourism products and services later in 2013.

Board Chairman John Walker congratulated the Business Association for moving so quickly in reopening the centre after the previous Incorporated Society running the i-Site closed its doors last week.

TCDC Economic Development and Communications Manager Benjamin Day will be meeting with members of the Business Association this week to work through the business plan to see how the Council can help the Association.

"It's great to see a strong and reinvigorated Business Association act so quickly and get an Information Centre reopened; we as a Council threw down the gauntlet last week for the private sector and the community to rise to the challenge and they have" said Mr Day."Our next mission together is to get through summer with volunteers and then reassess the landscape to see if we can build on the lessons we've learnt over this time".

"At today's meeting, Coromandel Adventures also expressed a desire to open up a 'booking office' in Coromandel Town before Christmas, so we also need to reassess things to see if there is still a gap in the market for an Information Centre once a new booking office is opened".

The Information Centre is currently operating from the same location at 355 Kapanga Road, Coromandel Town (next to the TCDC Service Centre), but is looking to move closer into town.
