Honourable Tariana Turia to open Coromandel Town's new pensioner flats 03 December 2012 A project to build seven new social-housing pensioner units in Coromandel will be officially opened by Associate Minister of Housing, the Honourable Tariana Turia, on Friday 14 December. The new flats will be opened with a powhiri at midday followed by lunch at the RSA hall for invited guests. A NZ Defence Service Medal Ceremony for Tom Kemp will also be held at the lunch. The pensioner unit project is a leading example of Council's collaborative community approach, working with Coromandel Independent Living Trust (CILT) and Housing NZ. In June last year, Council approved an interest-bearing loan (fixed at 6.5% per annum) to CILT of $75,000 over a 25-year term, to allow the seven units to be built. Housing New Zealand funded $1.2m for the project and is in discussion with CILT for further project development. Council also agreed to use $25,000 from its Housing For The Elderly reserves to help fund the stormwater and wastewater work to ensure the development could be built.
