Major council savings from revamped insurance arrangements

04 December 2012

Waikato’s regional and district councils have collectively saved ratepayers almost $700,000 for this financial year through revamped collective insurance arrangements, the Waikato Mayoral Forum meeting in Paeroa heard yesterday.

The $688,000 in savings in 2012-13 was achieved through collaboration between 10 councils involved with the Local Authority Shared Services (LASS) Ltd council-controlled organisation.

“This is a great example of how councils working together for the Waikato can save money on behalf of ratepayers,” forum deputy chair Julie Hardaker, the mayor of Hamilton, said after the meeting.

Waikato District’s chief executive Gavin Ion, who chairs LASS, said the majority of the savings would be ongoing. “We’ve collectively come up with a really good deal which trims our costs now and into the future.”

The savings came after a decision by the 10 councils to jointly tender their insurance renewal programme through LASS.

“All the councils involved are very pleased with the new arrangements, the nature of the cover they provide and the savings made on behalf of ratepayers. LASS will continue to look for further efficiencies that can deliver savings and value for the region,” said Mr Ion.

  • The councils involved in LASS are Waikato Regional Council, Hamilton City Council, and the Hauraki, Matamata-Piako, Otorohanga, South Waikato, Thames-Coromandel, Waikato, Waipa and Waitomo district councils.
