Free green waste trial opens to public

21 January 2016

Green waste drop-off trial opening hours begin this weekend

People waiting to take advantage of the free green waste clipping drop-off trial at Whitianga's bio-solids composter will have their chance from this Saturday.

The composting plant will be open from 10am to 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays and from 10am to 12noon on Wednesdays over the summer trial period.

We invite you to drop off domestic green waste that complies with the composter's requirements, such as lawn clippings, soft weeds and small prunings that fit through a small mulcher. (Less than 100mm diameter. See the photo for an example).

There will be signs indicating where the trial drop-off area is on the site and non-compliant material will be rejected.

Our composting plant takes soft vegetation and mulches it with the bio-solid product that comes out of the wastewater treatment plant.

We're trialling this to see if we can sort good quality green waste and also how much we can save on sorting and mulching costs if people bring useable green waste directly to the site.

The result is clean and safe Grade Aa compost that we are currently using on our parks and reserves. If our trial results in the capacity to produce more than our parks and reserves team requires, we may look at making our Grade Aa compost available to crop farmers and private residents for their gardens as well.
