Merry Christmas from Mayor Sandra

22 December 2016

Summer is here, which is the perfect time to get together with friends and family at the beach or around the barbeque, or get out and explore our beautiful piece of paradise.

Merry Christmas sandman

Across the District, there is something for everybody. Slow down and take some time to look around.  In all parts of the Coromandel we've had a bumper season for New Zealand's Christmas tree - the pohutukawa - and it's still going strong. In Thames, get amongst the shops, cafes and the museums dedicated to the gold mining heritage; or get into the cool shade of the hills up the Kauaeranga Valley.

Coromandel Town and the northern beaches provide everything needed for the quintessential Kiwi summer. Fairs and festivals and ratepayer meetings held in the area over this time provide a great opportunity for me to catch up with many of you here for the Christmas holidays.

From Whangapoua to Whenuakite Mercury Bay becomes host to a celebration of fairs, festivals, and family get togethers. Mercury Bay during this time is hordes of happy families picnicking under a kaleidoscope of coloured beach umbrellas, a crazy array of sandcastles, dripping ice creams, while out at sea on display is every form of water craft you can imagine. Banana boats, boogie boards, sailboats, SUPs, jet skis, charter boats and kayaks.

When I think of the South Eastern ward of Whangamata, Tairua and Pauanui over summer it's about being soaked in sunshine, scenic walking and biking routes, fishing, surf shops, restaurants and cafés selling delicious local cuisine, farmers markets, live bands, fairs, living the summer Kiwi dream and just hanging 10.

We love sharing our place with you because we know it IS good for your soul!

So please look after our special place and what it has to offer - and in turn the Coromandel will look after you. That includes the many professional people in paid or volunteers roles, working to keep you safe over summer. Along with the police and fire services, there are organisations like St John, Surf Lifesaving NZ, Coastguard, our rural fire volunteers and our search and rescue teams all on standby for those times when things go wrong.

So let's make their summer one to remember for all the right reasons - and a memorable, safe summer for you too.

Enjoy your time with us on the Coromandel, however long or short your visit may be. Smile, be happy and don't litter!
