Car parking changes to start ahead of Whitianga Town Centre upgrade

02 February 2018

Reconfiguration of car parks on two streets in Whitianga will start next week as part of the Town Centre upgrade project.

Reconfiguration of car parks on two streets in Whitianga will start next week as part of the Town Centre upgrade project.

The work, which starts on Thursday 8 February, will involve adding 13 extra car park spaces along Monk St, another 35 car parks will be created along either side of Lee St, and a further 15 around the perimeter of the Lee St car park (see car park maps below).

This work involves blasting the old line marking off the roads and spraying new parking layouts and will occur at night to minimise disruption to traffic and businesses.

We have also arranged a letter drop to the surrounding property and business owners to make them aware of the impending work.

Full construction for Stage One of the Town Centre upgrade is scheduled for Tuesday 3 April, after the Easter holiday weekend. Fifty-nine car parks will be removed from Albert Street, Whitianga's main street, so it can become more pedestrian and accessibility friendly and allows for more al-fresco style dining to be made available to the cafes and restaurants.

The removal of car parks from the main street will be offset by the creation of these 63 additional parks.
