Matarangi Beach Summer Festival - cancellations Events expected to be held on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 January have been cancelled due to the weather. Click here for updates. Pauanui Summer Series Kennedy Park, Pauanui The Pauanui summer series has various family fun events. Further details and updates including cancellations will be available on their Facebook page here. Interislander Summer Festival Thames Races Thursday 4 January 2018 Kids are absolutely spoilt for choice with a great range of activities; there will also be plenty of giveaways for the adults including the famous Thames Flounder Packs. Colour Splash - cancelled Unfortunately the Colour Splash event planned for 4 January 2018 is cancelled due to forecasts of heavy rain. Cooks Beach summer gala Over 100 stalls with games, rides, food, music and fun for the whole family. All proceeds go to Whenuakite School. For more information see here. Tairua Food and Wine Festival The Tairua School Wine & Food Festival is a major event for the local community and an important fundraiser for the school. The upcoming festival boasts an array of exciting new aspects along with the usual favourites, with a big focus on celebrating all things local to the Coromandel. Visitors to the festival will experience a delicious offering of food and beverages including several New Zealand craft selections. With entertainment provided by Anika Moa. Extravaganza Fair, Whangamata 6 and 7 January, 9am - 5pm at the Whangamata Area School A free event for the family, where you will find market stalls, arts and craft, food, all day entertainment with musicians playing tunes, kids shows running throughout the day where your children can 'shine like stars' and be involved. Art Events (Click to expand) Thames Public Art Trust - Sculpture Competition Competition is open until 10 January to anyone interested in developing sculpture projects to populate the Kopu -Thames leg of the Hauraki Rail Trail. Summer Concert Tour - Sold Out There will be a free shuttle bus service running to and from the event from Brophys Beach, Buffalo Beach Reserve, Whitianga Wharf, Taylors Mistake and Mercury Bay Area School. HMNZS Manawanui to be decommissioned Photo: (The Informer) HMNZS Manawanui at the Whitianga Wharf on Tuesday 25 April 2017 (ANZAC Day). Whitianga is the Manawanui’s home port and she will be decommissioned early this year. Prior to that, she will return to Whitianga for a five day home port decommissioning visit from Wednesday 31 January - Monday 5 February 2018. Wednesday 31 January • Berthing of the Manawanui next to the Whitianga Wharf at 7:30am, with an official welcome and powhiri by Thames Coromandel District Council mayor, Sandra Goudie and Ngati Hei. • A sundowner function on board the ship at 18:30pm with a Ceremonial Sunset. Thursday 1 February 2018 • A street parade through Whitianga at 2:00pm with the Royal New Zealand Navy Band and members of HMNZS Matataua (the Navy’s Littoral Warfare Unit). • A function at the Mercury Bay RSA (the Mercury Bay Club) at 3:00pm where gifts will be exchanged. Friday 2 February 2018 • Community service to be done by the Manawanui’s crew. • A function at the Matarangi Fire Brigade at 6:00pm. Saturday 3 February 2018 • A friendly challenge between the crew of the Manawanui and the Whitianga Volunteer Fire Brigade (involving a variety of drills) at 10:00am. • A function at the Whitianga Fire Station following the challenge. Sunday 4 February 2018 • A public open day on board the Manawanui from 10:00am - 4:00pm. • A Ceremonial Sunset on board the ship at 8:20pm. Monday 5 February 2018 • The Manawanui sailing from Whitianga for the last time with a final farewell and wave-off at 11:50am. Click here to read more. Leadfoot Festival 3 and 4 February 2018 280 Link Road, Hahei The Leadfoot Festival is a unique weekend on the New Zealand and International calendar that brings together a unique mix of classic cars, vintage motorcycles and motorsport legends. New Zealand racing legend, Rod Millen opens his private grounds at the Leadfoot Ranch to host more than 150 champion and competitive race participants. For ticket information see Leadfoot.
