Commemorative piece sought for 200 years of Coromandel

16 January 2019

f you are an artist looking for a new opportunity, the Coromandel 200 community group is looking to commission a commemorative piece marking the arrival of HMSS Coromandel to our waters, 200 years ago.

The HMSS Coromandel dropped anchor in what is now called Coromandel Harbour to collect timber for spars and to survey the coast in 1820. A model of the ship can be seen at the Coromandel School of Mines and Museum at 841 Rings Road, Coromandel Town.

Meanwhile, a working group, "Coromandel 200", made up of a small team of enthusiastic community members is making it their mission to ensure this significant date is commemorated in an appropriate manner.

"That's why we're calling for expressions of interest to create a commemorative piece such as an artwork, to be located at Whangarahi Reserve in Coromandel Town," says Peter Pritchard from the Coromandel 200 group.
