Rates rebate help available

15 July 2019

You may be able to get a rebate on your 2019/2020 Council rates - and we have some drop-in clinics coming up to help you with this.

Rate rebateThe maximum rebate this year has increased to $640. Rebates are calculated by the Department of Internal Affairs on a sliding scale dependant on the amount of household income and rates payable for the year. Use the calculator here to work out what you might be eligible for.

Application forms and more information can be found here, or pop into one of our service centres.

Our Customer Services teams are available to help you fill in the forms. You will need to bring ID such as your driver licence, Community Services Card or SuperGold Card and provide proof of income when applying for the rebate:

  • if your only source of income is superannuation, no proof is required. DIA provide this information
  • if you receive interest from your bank or investments, you will need to get a Resident Withholding Tax (RWT) certificate from your bank or investment company
  • obtain a summary of earnings from Inland Revenue (IRD) by:
  1. Phone: 0800 257 778; this is the summary of earnings direct line (it is automated)
  2. The voice will ask you to enter your IRD number
  3. You will be asked to confirm that your address has not changed since your last interaction with IRD (they will give you that date)
  4. You will then be asked to enter the year you are wanting the information for - for this current rating year it will be 2018
  5. You will then be advised this will be sent in the next 5 to 10 days

This process will only take a few minutes.
