New toilet facility for Whitianga beach hot spot

20 March 2018

A new toilet facility will be built at an increasingly popular swimming and picnic spot on Buffalo Beach Reserve in Whitianga.

More and more people are using Taputaputea Stream (also known as Mother Browns Creek) on Buffalo Beach Rd, and the site is particularly popular with young families who swim at the stream during summer and groups using the BBQ and picnic facilities.

The Mercury Bay Community Board has approved development of a new toilet and changing facilities near the stream  to provide for the growing use of the area.

The board's chairperson Paul Kelly says the council has been speaking to the community about possible locations for a new toilet since late last year.

The majority of submissions were in support of this location.

"The site near the stream is considered to be the spot to best meet existing and future demand for users of Taputapuatea Stream and its barbeque area, and to limit visual impacts to adjoining neighbours," says Mr Kelly.

The plan is to build a low profile, high quality single toilet block that will sit unobtrusively in front of the sand dunes. Landscaping and materials will complement the overall appearance of the building and be in keeping with the dune environment.

"The new facility will be a valuable asset to the local community," says Mr Kelly.

Our council will start progressing designs and residents living nearby will be kept informed of progress and will be given the opportunity to have input on the design.
