New look on the way for Coromandel Town's main street 10 October 2018 Coromandel Town’s main street is in for some TLC next year, with an upgrade due to start soon after Easter 2019. The Coromandel-Colville Community Board has been talking to local businesses and residents about design plans to improve Kapanga Rd, the main retail street in Coromandel Town, and improve the intersection of Tiki Rd, Kapanga Rd and Wharf Rd. Designs for the upgrade, including the intersection design, have now been approved by the Board. The key focus is to reduce the excessive ‘cross fall’ or slope on the main street road, which has made access difficult for cars and has potential for vehicle damage to shop verandas. The upgrade will also improve traffic flow through the intersection of Tiki Rd, Kapanga Rd, and Wharf Rd. Plans also include moving the pedestrian crossing at Kapanga Rd to a more appropriate location, which is still being investigated. Coromandel-Colville Community Board Chairman Peter Pritchard welcomes the upgrade. "We're thrilled to see these improvements happening in the Town's main thoroughfare for traffic heading further north to Colville and beyond," Peter says. Work is scheduled to start on 29 April 2019, to allow for Easter and ANZAC Day. In the meantime, work will now begin on a detailed design for final approval and the tender process to appoint a contractor. Our Council is also working on upcoming infrastructure upgrades to stormwater and the local water supply at the same time. The timing and extent of any road closures will not be known until a contractor is appointed. Pottery Lane extension Separate to the Coromandel Town Centre Upgrade, Pottery Lane will be extended to reduce commercial traffic on Kapanga Road, which is expected to reduce congestion around the town centre. This is one of the major decisions our elected members made after consultation in the 2018-2018 Long Term Plan, and will cost $2.2 million.
