Karangahake Gorge evening road closures 08 February 2019 If you travel on our Coromandel roads on a regular basis then you may have noticed signage about the upcoming evening road closures and road works. Asphalt road resurfacing work will be taking place on State Highway 2 through the Karangahake Gorge, so the road will be closed from 8.00pm – 5.00am on Monday 11 February and Tuesday 12 February. The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists to plan ahead to avoid the resurfacing hours. Over the remainder of summer there will also be various road works across our District, so keep an eye out for speed restrictions and warnings. NZTA are finishing off design work on the following projects that will help make SH25 more resilient to the effects of storms and heavy rain. These are: Boundary Creek (Thames Coast) - A rock wall to protect against erosion. Kereta Hill (Thames Coast) - A retaining wall. Kuaotunu Hill - Retaining walls at two sites. All of these projects are expected to be built by the middle of 2019. In addition to this there will be about 5km of seal repairs on SH25 north of Thames over the summer, with around 12km of resurfacing planned on the remainder of SH25. For more information on the SH25/SH25A Thames-Coromandel project, contact email@example.com or visit www.nzta.govt.nz/thames-coromandel. Summer is the optimum time for this work to occur as it is warmer, allowing bitumen to stick more effectively to the road surface and for crews to have more daylight hours and visibility for greater safety. NZTA thanks motorists for their patience and understanding while this essential maintenance is completed. Please keep to the temporary speed limit to ensure the safety of the road crews and all motorists. Thames Coast Rd (SH 25) – Have your say In the wake of the January 2018 storm, NZTA installed protective rock walls at Te Mata, Ngarimu and Thornton Bays to prevent further damage to SH25, the Thames Coast Road. Now NZTA is looking to develop a permanent solution, on that provides some protection for the road and houses from storm damage and erosion, but allows residents and visitors access to the beach. NZTA has worked with a specialist coastal engineer to develop some ideas as to how this can be achieved and it would like to hear your thoughts on what's being proposed for these areas. Once NZTA has identified some proposed solutions, it will need to seek funding approval for this project as it has not yet been confirmed. You can look through the options and share your views with NZTA by going to the website where there is a downloadable form that you can print, fill in and send back to firstname.lastname@example.org or to the postal address which is included in the form. Please send your feedback by Friday 22 February.
