Road closures due to severe weather

Due to the severe weather that has battered the Coromandel overnight many roads are badly affected by slips and debris. Please restrict travel or visits outdoors to essential journeys only.

All the rivers and catchments are full to overflowing and many roads are impacted by slips and debris.

State Highways

Due to a large slip, SH25 is closed between Wharekaho and Kūaotunu. Waka Kotahi advises that closure will remain in place until it can be cleared. Expect delays. Use the alternative route: from Wharekaho: south on SH25, SH25A, SH25 via Coromandel; from Kūaotunu: SH25 via Coromandel, SH25A, north on SH25.

Council Roads
  • Tapu Coroglen Road is now Open
  • Hikuai Settlement Road is now Open
  • School Rd, Hikuai is now Open

Ongoing:

  • Ford at the end of Old Maratoto Road is impassible (5.2km from State Highway) – Road closed at ford
  • Ford at the end of Wentworth Valley Road is impassable (4.2km from State Highway) – Road closed at ford
  • Second ford on Victoria Street, Thames is impassable (900m from State Highway) – Road closed at this ford

Residents to monitor fords against flood depth gauges/signs once waters recede.
