Save money - Love Food Hate Waste

Holiday makers on the Coromandel this summer are being encouraged to think carefully about ways to minimise their waste as the population spikes and Kerbside rubbish collection increases across the district.

Between December and January last year Kerbside collection in our District jumped by more than 260 tonnes. Food waste is also included in that figure.

“A little bit of planning could go a long way to seriously reducing that number. It’s not only good for the environment but also good for people’s wallets,” says Bruce Hinson, our Group Manager Infrastructure Delivery.

Mr Hinson says food waste is a big consideration over the holiday period and with that in mind, local Coromandel eateries have shared tips and recipes for minimising food waste. Luke Reilly from Kuaotunu café Luke’s Kitchen says it’s easy to see how food gets wasted over the holidays. 

“People stock up on food before they arrive. They go fishing and catch more food. They go out for dinner a couple of times, then there’s all this food they need to get rid of before they go home.”

“Everyone forgets but I’d say try your best to have a rough meal plan before you go food shopping,” says Luke.

The Café will also be selling pizza dough over the holidays.

“We make our pizzas fresh, but pizzas are also a great way to use up your leftovers,” says Luke.

Research from Love Food Hate Waste shows that 81 percent of people would be happy to receive food from a neighbour, but only 13 percent of people have ever offered their excess food to their neighbours. 

Julie McMillan from Waiomu Beach Café encourages people to plan their leftovers, think about food storage and ask their neighbours or others in the community if they would like meals. 

“Food is such a great way of creating community. Kai is community.”

Portion size is also important. Rebecca Murray from Whitianga’s Blue Ginger Café says people should think about a handful of food being a reasonable portion size.

“The ideal amount of protein is around 200 to 250 grams of meat per person, keep that in mind when you cook the barbecue,” says Rebecca.

Nationally New Zealanders throw away 122,547 tonnes of food a year worth about $827 million.

That amount of food would feed our District’s permanent population for eight whole years.

Summer Kerbside collection schedule starts next week

Our summer Kerbside rubbish and recycling collection schedule starts on Wednesday 26 December - Boxing Day - and continues until Saturday 9 February 2019.

Collections will be one day later after Christmas, Auckland Anniversary and Waitangi Day. Next week that means if you usually have a collection on Tuesday, it will be on Wednesday instead, and so on for the rest of the week.

Only blue Council rubbish bags, wheelie bins and glass crates placed by the kerb (kerbside, or close to the road edge if there's no kerb) will be collected. Bags hanging on trees or poles or left in cages will not be collected.

If you're worried about pests like seagulls tearing into bags and spilling rubbish, you can purchase a gullinator from any of our Council offices for $15. It's a sturdy mesh bag with a hoop at one end that sits over your rubbish bag. Or, you can place your bag on top of your glass crate. If you see spilled rubbish that the rubbish truck runners weren't able to collect, report it to us on 07 868 0200 and we'll arrange to have it picked up.

Please only put your rubbish out on the morning of your scheduled collection. If you're leaving town before then, please drop off your blue Council rubbish bags and any recycling for FREE at one of our seven Refuse Transfer Stations. They are all open extended hours over the summer and four of them have after-hours drop-off facilities for blue bags and recyclables. Hours and locations are at www.tcdc.govt.nz/rts.
