Where are all the local election candidates?

10 August 2022

With just two days left until the candidate nomination period for October’s local body elections closes at noon on Friday 12 August, there aren’t enough candidates to fill some of our Community Boards.

“This means it will be Council that will likely be delegated those particular Boards’ decision-making powers on issues that the local Boards would normally lead,” says Aileen Lawrie, our Chief Executive.

“Power would lie with Council until we can hold by-elections where needed and have Community Boards and the appropriate delegations in place,” she says.

We have five Community Boards which require four members each.

  • Thames
  • Coromandel-Colville
  • Whangamatā
  • Tairua-Pāuanui
  • Mercury Bay (which covers Whangapoua thorugh to Whenuakite)

Those five Commuinity Boards form our district’s four Wards (Tairua-Pāuanui and Whangamatā combine to make up the South Eastern Ward). There is a  varying number of Councillors for each Ward, depending on the Ward’s population, for a total of nine Councillors.

The Mayor is elected at large from the entire district’s voters.

As of yesterday afternoon, only Whangamatā Community Board had enough candidates for a full complement of four Members. As there are only four candidates for this Board, that means Whangamatā voters won’t get a choice about who’s on their Board – all four will be elected by acclamation with no vote taking place.

It’s important to have a good range of candidates for voters to choose from so that we have elected members who represent the full diversity of our communities.

Community Board members advocate for the interests of their community and have responsibility for the work programmes within their Board area for harbour facilities, community centres and halls, airfields, public toilets, community grants, parks and reserves, local strategic planning and more.

Ours is not the only district facing a lack of candidates. National media report the same issue in many parts of the country, as in this example from Radio NZ.

Full information on standing as a candidate is on our website at tcdc.govt.nz/election. On that page you’ll also find our Pre-Election Report and Candidate Information Handbook, which are your guidebooks to what’s involved in being an elected member and some of the challenges facing our district.

File your candidate nomination papers by 12 noon on Friday 12 August. If there’s a mistake and you leave it until the last minute you may not have enough time to correct this and refile, so don’t delay.

People who own a property in the Coromandel but don’t live here can vote in our district too. Go to tcdc.govt.nz/election to find out how to register on the Ratepayer Electoral Roll.

We are updating our list of candidates daily on our website at tcdc.govt.nz/nominations.
